House Church
“No running in Church!” admonished one nine year old to another. Would it surprise you to learn the two youngsters were inside a community center located at a local mobile home community at the time?
“Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” (1 Corinthians 3:16)
It doesn’t need to be Sunday morning and we don’t have to be in a building with a steeple atop to hold Church. “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am with them.” Matthew 18:20
That is the truth that Mission Norman founders Gene and Malinda Barnes embraced when they began their multi-housing ministry on faith nearly two decades ago.
Today, the Mission’s 19 House Churches meet on Sunday, Wednesday, Friday and after school: pretty much anytime the community can gather to learn about Jesus.
The day I attended the message was centered on prayer, but the worship leader shared as we were putting up chairs and tables that the underlying theme is always “God made you. He has a purpose for you and loves you more than you can imagine.” He shared that kids don’t hear that in school; they are much more likely to hear that they came from monkeys and are here by accident.
Do you think the message of purpose and hope is vital for our children to hear? If so, consider supporting this vibrant ministry. Mr. Barnes believes that if the volunteers were available, the Mission could start five new house Churchs a week in our community!
